Vehicle owners test car-sharing networks

Drivers who buy memberships in car clubs can help reduce traffic and pollution in America's crowded cities by renting vehicles for short trips and errands, then turning them over to the next busy citizen when the jobs are done.

The business model is evolving fast as consumers learn about the assets - and liabilities - of bypassing car leasing dealerships and relying on a shared fleet of rentals.

One of the newest iterations of the idea is called personal car-sharing, and promises to create a social network that connects owners of under-used cars with a community of trusted drivers. California and Oregon have recently approved legislation allowing the practice, provided by start-up companies such as Getaround.

With a fleet that includes an Acura TSX, Mazda5, BMW 328i, Toyota Prius and a Mini Cooper, Getaround acts a broker for vehicle lease holders who want to earn rental dollars - up to $40 per day - instead of simply parking their car. Participants use the company's website or smartphone app to reserve space on their preferred model and location.

The concept demands a shift from personal to shared transport, and a leap of faith by owners that their clients will return the autos promptly and safely. Reliable insurance may help ease their worries, once each state amends its regulations to allow short-term coverage by new drivers.
