Porsche 918 hybrid tantalizes car fans
Sports car enthusiasts have flocked to Porsche showrooms for decades, drawn by the cars' roaring engines, tight performance and beautiful contours. Their devotion has made the brand one of the most popular
cars for lease, and the company is hoping to accommodate this high demand by releasing a steady stream of new models.
One of the latest designs to emerge from Porsche engineering studios is the Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid, first unveiled in March at the Geneva car show and destined for a still-unscheduled U.S. launch in the future, according to Road & Track magazine.
Porsche showed the new car to American experts during an August test drive in the hills of California. The two-seat sportscar combines the best of both worlds, blitzing racetracks at a top speed of 198 miles per hour, then throttling back to an efficient 78 miles per gallon in city driving, company figures show.
Owners first charge the car by plugging its lithium-ion battery pack into an electrical socket before leaving their garage. On the road, drivers pick the appropriate performance mode from four options - electric, hybrid, sport and race, Porsche project leader Gernot Döllner told the magazine. The result is up to 718 horsepower from a V-8 gasoline engine linked to two electric motors.
