Nissan seeks new niche with convertible crossover
Drivers pick crossover
cars for lease when they need a combination of a spacious SUV and an efficient wagon. Combining a car and a truck allows them to pick the best features of each. Now Nissan is taking the mix a step further, announcing plans to build a crossover with a convertible roof that may remind some buyers of a sporty sedan.
Nissan could launch the convertible Murano in the U.S. as early as 2011, according to the Automotive News. The Japanese carmaker
showed a prototype to auto dealers at a convention in Las Vegas this August, but was mum on specifications and details.
In appearance, the concept car was a two-door vehicle with a droptop, and maintained the Murano's trademark bulky backside. The new design extends Nissan's stable of crossovers, which includes the large Murano, a medium Rogue and a smaller Juke that is planned for release next year. Company officials hope the addition will spice up Nissan's marketing image.
"It's not going to be a volume car. But there's a degree of bravery for us to bring out a car like that right now. It will surprise a lot of people," Nissan's North American sales chief Brian Carolin told the magazine.
