Lincoln MKT uses big new engine to chase Audi and Acura
Lincoln is looking for new
car leasing customers with its MKT full-size crossover, upgraded for the 2013 model year to include sharper handling, better fuel economy and new safety technologies.
Drivers who enjoy smooth suspension will cheer for the continuously controlled damping (CCD) feature, an array of computer sensors that quickly adjust the car’s struts and shock absorbers to changing driving conditions such as sharp turns or potholes.
"The 2013 MKT with Continuously Controlled Damping delivers a surprisingly vibrant blend of ride and handling," said Scott Tobin, director of Lincoln product development. "It's more than you'd expect from a full-size, three-row luxury crossover."
Power for the smooth ride comes from a standard 3.7-liter V6 engine that cooks up 300 horsepower at an efficiency of 17 miles per gallon in city driving and 25 mpg on highways. Those who desire swifter speed may opt for the 355-hp, twin-turbo, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine instead, sacrificing a few miles per gallon for the extra acceleration.
Neither engine's mileage rating will win a fuel efficiency contest on highways where many small sedans and hybrids reach 40 mpg, but the luxury
vehicle lease market tends to compete more on power than mileage. On that count, the new MKT's lusty horsepower eclipses Lincoln rivals such as the Audi Q7 and Acura MDX and nearly matches the Mercedes-Benz R-350, the company says.
