Drivers catch glimpse of the future of green car leasing with Hyundai Sonata hybrid
With most of the big name automakers seeking to carve out their own place within the burgeoning green
car leasing industry, many companies are pulling out all the stops to stand out among the competition. One company making a play to replace Toyota's Prius as the most popular hybrid sedan on the market is Hyundai, whose new Sonata hybrid has been turning heads in both the aesthetic and technological sectors of the automotive industry.
The new Sonata features a unique combination of a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine specially designed to close intake valves later than typical engines with a 30-kilowatt permanent magnet motor built to increase sustainability and improve fuel economy.
Drivers can also expect a six-speed automatic transmission, a rare feat in this class of automobiles made possible by the hard coupling of the electric traction motor and the input of the transmission, which replaces the torque convertor and allows for more versatility in the drivetrain.
Capable of hitting 0-62 in 9.2 seconds, the new Sonata also comes equipped with a 42-kilogram lithium polymer battery pack that is lighter, smaller and more efficient than more readily available commercial batteries and marks the technology's first flirtation with mass production.
