Buyer demand for SUVs and crossovers has surged in September, according to Swapalease.com, the world’s largest auto lease marketplace. According to user data, interest in top SUV and crossover models to lease has increased across the boards from August to September on the popular lease transfer Web site.

Buyer searches for the ever-popular BMW X5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz M Class models on Swapalease.com had the most significant increase from August to September. Other popular SUV models include General Motors’ Cadillac Escalade and Chevrolet Tahoe as well as the Porsche Cayenne, and Land Rover’s Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, among others.

Swapalease.com, the world’s largest auto lease marketplace, is reporting a 203% increase in site traffic from Los Angeles and a 171% increase in site traffic from New York City in June 2009 compared to June of last year. Overall site visits also increased from June 2008 to June 2009.

Top vehicle searches have increased since June of 2008, as well, including searches for most BMW models. The BMW 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series models in particular have maintained top five spots in the search lists both years.

Hummer models were heavily searched and only time will tell if this trend continues after GM’s recent acknowledgement of the brand’s sale to a Chinese manufacturing company.

Part of the increase in GM vehicle searches may be attributable to their captive finance company GMAC effectively exiting leasing early in the final quarter of 2008 by no longer offering subvented leases. With fewer attractive leases originating on domestic vehicles, consumers are turning to Swapalease.com and taking advantage of those already in process.

"Our user data indicates that the economy, and a recent uptick in fuel prices have not resulted in a drop in demand in our lease transfer marketplace," says Ron Joseph, co-founder of Swapalease.com.
